Paper outlining the development of manufactured gas as a light source, the use of gas in Europe and the United States, and the introduction of illuminating gas to Baltimore by Rembrandt Peale in 1816. Also includes information on the Gas Light Company of Baltimore, the first gas company in the United States, and other gas companies in Maryland. Also contains photographs and other illustrations. This paper was prepared as part of Thompson's initiation into Phi Mu, an engineering honor society.
